Your price can be very different from the average. A smaller home with modest air conditioning use may need a much smaller system, while a large home that runs AC hard all summer may need more. Price also depends on:

  • The panels, inverter and other equipment you choose
  • Your roof type and layout
  • Whether your main electrical panel needs an upgrade
  • Whether you add a battery

Is there still a federal solar tax credit in 2026?

Not for homeowners who buy their system. The 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025, moved its end date up by about a decade.

Systems owned by a third party, such as under a power purchase agreement (PPA) or lease, may still qualify for a separate business tax credit that the system’s owner claims. Its deadlines run through 2027, and it can lower the rate you pay under a PPA.

How will NV Energy’s new daily demand charge affect solar homes?

NV Energy plans to add a daily demand charge for residential customers in Southern Nevada. After two delays, it’s now scheduled to start in January 2027. The charge bills 14 cents per kilowatt for your home’s highest 15 minutes of electricity use each day. NV Energy estimates it will add about $20 a month for an average customer and about $12 a month for rooftop solar customers.

Solar panels alone don’t always lower this charge, because a home’s peak often comes in the late afternoon or evening, when AC runs hardest and panel output is dropping. Two things can help:

  • A battery that powers your home during those peak hours
  • Staggering large appliances so they don’t all run at once
